Making Remote Train Monitoring Work For You
Making RTM
work for you
Remote train monitoring (RTM), sometimes called remote health monitoring, engine health monitoring or remote condition monitoring; take sensor feeds off your asset and provide an analyst with some form of trace or data files through connected software. This paper considers the management of that information and making it work harder for you.
Extracting the value from RTM
Remote monitoring in rail saw its introduction around the turn of the Millennium with General Motors (Rail) Division trialling on-board computerised devices on North American Railways. Of note, the identified objective was increases in performance, availability and asset utilisation, rather than cost.
There are many variant systems on the market presently, all offer advantages and drawbacks. Most new trains have a high-specification RTM pre-fitted. Retro fit systems are also available; Perpetuum, for example, are making good progress in the field of self-powered sensors.
Choosing the right system is a technical task, in this paper we have assumed that decision is made – the challenge we address here is making the system deliver for you.
