GS03 Optimising Maintenance Performance Course & Maintenance Effectiveness

The course is a series of practical tools to help make your maintenance programme more effective.

Q. Tell me about this upgrade to GS03 Optimising Maintenance Performance programme you have just launched?

A: Well, I guess firstly I should say it is a bit of a lie to be honest; it is a series of practical tools to help make your maintenance programme more effective. The term optimising is more commonly used though and why we continued to title it that way.

Q. Interesting, so what is the difference between maintenance effectiveness and the optimisation of maintenance?

A: In broad terms it is about bandwidth of the intervention. Optimisation is widely understood in the industry and is often applied in a technical silo, whereas effectiveness considers the whole maintenance system. One might argue that the true application of RCM3 or MSG3 are closer to maintenance effectiveness but even these rarely consider the operational context in its totality.

Q. Okay, I think I understand but could you give me some examples?

A: Of course, I have seen several over the years, all undertaken for the right principles but tackled in isolation left the following:

• One case of extending a B exam periodicity brought engine oil change onto an A exam, increasing complexity and risk in another area of maintenance.
• Extending an A exam periodicy gave rise to brake wear out challenges.
• Changing brake pad materials to longer life, meant more maintenance visits to depot.
• Changing a task that meant the train had to be moved three times on a B exam, this was due depot constraints.

These examples show that all optimisation must be effectively delivered. At EngPro we always look at maintenance as a system where all elements must harmonise to make the task work in the most effective and efficient manner.

Q. Tell me more about the system of maintenance you have just described?

A: It is a simple model we use in our training courses to show the layers of organisational issues that are required to make the task effective. It considers supervision, business process, managed control, leadership…Essentially all aspects of making the task effective.

Q. Do you have an example to expand that point?

A. Yes, consider we spend hours developing a revised maintenance programme that gives us a reduction in maintenance; then we have below standard planning capability and so have no way of applying the new regime. Or equally we could have issues with controlling production and so the checks extend out, so negating any advantages Engineer teams have built in.

Q. What is the central message of any optimisation programme?

Teamwork!! Unless you engage all the key operational delivery primary roles (Planning, Production, Materials, Operations and Technical) – you will at best achieve sub-standard results; at worst you’ll waste your time.

Q. So, to finish off, tell me about the GS03 course?

It is a one day course that is either delivered at your site or can be done remotely. It is mostly a knowledge-based course with delegate participation.
It covers an introduction and a little on the history of maintenance effectiveness. We continue to look at data management and how effective AMS use can liberate significant improvements. We look at reliability centred maintenance, concluding with a look at predictive tools and their use in the business. We focus the content on the engineering teams providing leadership on maintenance effectiveness, rather than just concentrating on the optimisation silo.

Q. What are the delegates saying about it?

A. All were very positive about it, we had a 100% recommendation. Several asked it be done more as a seminar and we agree and will reshape the content to allow a deeper engagement in your particular organisation. Involving self-reading and some engagement testing before the day, leaving the day to focus on client specifics.
